Taking an exam with Examo

Your college or university uses Examo to supervise some of its exams. Here is what to expect, how to get ready, and what happens to your recordings.

Step by step

From the link to your exam

Five steps: open the exam link, install Examo, sign in with Microsoft 365, pass the pre-check, take the exam
  1. Open your exam link

You'll find a "Take the exam" link in the exam's event in your Outlook calendar. Your teacher may also share it in Teams or Moodle.

  2. Install Examo, in one click

If Examo isn't installed yet, the link installs it. It works on Windows 10 and 11 and on current macOS versions, and doesn't need administrator rights.

  3. Sign in with your school account

Use the Microsoft 365 account your institution gave you. There is no new account to create.

  4. Pass the pre-check

Examo checks your camera, microphone and connection if your exam uses them. Do it ahead of time so exam day starts on time. A proctor may confirm your identity and your attendance before the exam starts.

  5. Take your exam

The exam opens in Examo, in a Moodle quiz, a Word, Excel or PDF document, or the exam application your teacher chose. When you're done, submit it as instructed.

Before exam day

Get ready

Do the pre-check early

Install Examo and run the pre-check a day or two before. If something doesn't work, you'll have time to get help.

Read the exam's rules

Your teacher decides what is allowed: a calculator, a document, specific websites. Anything not allowed will be blocked during the exam.

Close what you don't need

Quit messaging apps, browsers and other programs before you start, so the exam opens cleanly.

Your computer

What you need

ComputerWindows 10 or 11, or a Mac running a macOS version Apple still supports. Your own computer or a campus workstation.

Camera and microphoneOnly if your exam records them. Your teacher will tell you.
InternetA regular connection is enough. You don't need high-speed internet the whole time.

Your privacy

What is recorded, and who sees it

  • Only what your exam needsDepending on the exam: your camera and microphone, your screens, and your keyboard and mouse. Each one can be turned off by your institution.
  • Seen by your institution onlyRecordings are visible to the teachers and administrators your institution authorizes.
  • No facial recognition, no AIYour face is never turned into biometric data, and no algorithm decides whether you cheated. A person reviews anything that was flagged.
  • Kept in Canada, then deletedData is stored in Canada and deleted automatically at the end of the period your institution sets.

If something goes wrong

Don't panic

  • Your connection drops? Keep going. The exam and the recording continue on your computer and catch up when the connection returns.
  • Kicked out of the exam? Open the link again: you can resume where you were.
  • Can't sign in? Tell your proctor. They can give you a one-time access code.
  • Lost time to a technical problem? Your proctor can extend your time.
  • Need accommodations? Extra time, breaks or assistive technology are set up by your institution's accessibility service. Contact them before the exam.
